Charlie Baird has the experience and knowledge we need to bring “Justice that Works” to Travis County. As District Attorney, Charlie Baird will work on a number of key issues to make the District Attorney’s office serve the people of Travis County better.
Tough When It Counts. Securing public safety is job one of a prosecutor. Individuals accused of violent crimes, dangerous conduct or harming a child should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law in a swift and effective manner. As a husband and father of two young children, Charlie Baird believes everyone in Travis County has the right to live in a safe community.
Common Sense Justice. Charlie Baird believes that sentencing non-violent drug offenders to lengthy prison sentences is not the solution and does not reflect the values of Travis County. As District Attorney, he will improve access to rehabilitative services for non-violent offenders rather than treating them the same as dangerous and violent felons who should be imprisoned. Rehabilitative efforts will reduce the county jail population and enable these individuals to become productive members of society.
Justice That Works Around The Clock. Charlie Baird will institute a “24-7″ case screening system to review arrests by law enforcement to help foster quick resolutions and ensure that non-violent and low-level offenders aren’t costing taxpayers thousands of dollars as they sit in jail awaiting trial. Travis County is the only urban county without a such a process. Charlie released this plan in October. Read more about it here.
Reducing Recidivism. As District Attorney, Charlie Baird will make reducing recidivism a priority. Focusing on recidivism will not only save taspayer dollars but more importantly it will break the cycle of intergenerational criminality.
